The Federal Government Has Directed All Contractors To Commence Work On Their Respective Sites Within 14 Days.

The Federal Government has directed all contractors to commence work on their respective sites within 14 days.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, directed and appealed to all contractors to move to their respective sites within 14 days. During a meeting with contractors, partners, and stakeholders in the works sector at the ministry's conference room in Abuja, Umahi urged contractors to stop making promises and instead focus on delivering quality work. He emphasized that their ability to provide was more critical than making statements. The Director (Information), Press and Public Relations at the Ministry, Blessing Lere-Adams, issued a statement saying that the minister directed all contractors to go back to their respective sites and carry out permanent jobs that would stand the test of time and that letters would be issued to this effect.

He said there would be no processing of certificates or payment of mobilization fees to contractors who failed to obey the rules.

"If you want me to pay your mobilization fee or process your certificate, please obey first. We want to know how you got your POP (variation). How did your POP probably occur in labour? We want to know how much you spent on diesel, what is used in asphalt production, and in doing the work.

"So we want to know what the contractor is doing; we must know so that we can find out how we can help," he insisted.

According to him, having a work program is essential, as the certificates can only be processed with it. He also mentioned that the minister must be informed if there is a need to increase the contract amount. He stated that he would only authorize payments or sign certificates with a proper explanation. Therefore, their right is to ask for clarification before signing any certificates.

So if they sue me, it is not the directors; please give me the privilege to preserve my future by letting me know because if  I carry the Bible or the Qur'an, I will be able to say I know about it," he added.

The minister expressed his displeasure over the sourcing of asphalt used. Research shows that the importation of bitumen into the country was less than 5 per cent. He added that Nigerians are tired of game-playing and want to see 10 kilometres of good roads.
